The Vilnius Institute of Policy Analysis has for the first time concluded and published a municipal welfare index that reveals in which municipalities of the country is best to live. As shown by the survey, the municipality of Druskininkai is one of the leading country's municipalities.
The municipal welfare index is based on statistics of 2017. The study assessed 5 separate indicators: social security (integration into the labour market, equal opportunities and coverage of social assistance), physical security (road safety, accessibility of medical assistance, disease statistics, environmental indicators), a viable economy (competitiveness indicators, investment attractiveness, average salary, number of enterprises), quality education (accessibility of education, indicators of non-formal children education, results of mature examinations), demography (old age factor, net migration indicators).
In Druskininkai Municipality, physical security indicators were particularly high - the municipality in the index took third place and bypassed major cities, resorts and all municipalities of the Alytus region. The indicators of education quality are high as well - the municipality of Druskininkai falls into the top eighth. In the social security category, Druskininkai ranks as 12th, a viable economy - 14th. After summing up all indicators that make up the index, the municipality of Druskininkai, among the 60 municipalities of Lithuania, ranks at high 16th position.
"We are happy with another favourable assessment of the country's experts. The success of the areas analysed depends not only on the functions of the municipality effectively, but also on the quality and operational dialogue with the community and business. Of course, the overall results of the index show that in some areas we still have where to grow and improve. We will definitely take this into account",- said Vilma Jurgelevičienė, director of the Druskininkai Municipality Administration.
Most of the discussions were caused by the fifth - demography - indicator. The value of this indicator in the index is determined by the number of elderly people aged 65 and older, compared to one hundred children from birth to 14 years of age -- i.e., as many older people as possible in the municipality, the place in the index lower, Druskininkai was given only 44th position in ranking . The municipality of Druskininkai is truly proud that the life expectancy of the resort is longer compared to the Lithuanian average. People of retirement age from all over Lithuania are increasingly buying apartments and choosing life in the resort for the quality of medical and health services provided here. This shows that it is comfortable to live in Druskininkai, an attractive environment is created excatly here. For this reason, there has been a lot of debate or is it really logical to consider such a situation negatively?
“Life expectancy is one of the main indicators that illustrate the health status of the community, the operational and efficiency of health care services. We must be glad that the people of Druskininkai municipality lives longer than those of other municipalities. In this matter, the indicators of our municipality are particularly high, higher than the country's average, so our result is the aspiration of other municipalities,",- said by Inga Kostina, director of the Public Health Office of Druskininkai Municipality.
The medical and health services base created in Druskininkai leads to a longer life expectancy, created by a convenient and high-quality environment, and people buying apartments and arriving to live in a resort from all over Lithuania.
