The monument was unveiled on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Lithuanian genius in 1975. V.Vildžiūnas and archit. R.P.Dičius. The monument was erected in Druskininkai not by chance. Čiurlionis’ childhood and first steps in music took place here. The Lithuanian genius linked himself and Druskininkai for centuries when he said: ‘I imagine the world as a great symphony: people are the songs, and the most beautiful melody is the distant Druskininkai. Čiurlionis’ works are dominated by the urge to reach the realm of light and harmony. The authors’ idea was to create an element in the square that a person would find when out for a walk and, following it, would be led to Čiurlionis’ monument. Bright paths were created, with red granite inlays, which seem to lead to Čiurlionis. The sculpture itself, with its massive, ribbed, soaring base, throws out wings like an angel’s wings, between which a portrait of the genius is very expressively formed.
