Monument to the Jewish ghetto
Right next to the church housing the icon of the Mother of God, ‘Joy of All Who Sorrow’, stands a Holocaust memorial. It was here, in the autumn of 1941, that a ghetto was established in the town: nearly a thousand Jews were herded into an area enclosed by a barbed-wire fence. In November 1943, the ghetto was liquidated and the Jews were deported to the Kolbasino concentration camp, located near Grodno. During those years, a third of Druskininkai’s population was exterminated.
