Legend has it that the valley was once the site of the rich city of Raigard, whose inhabitants were always feasting, celebrating too much and thus angering Perkūnas. As a result of their behaviour, the city collapsed and burned to the ground, and ever since, the bell of the damned has been ringing in the earth as they search for a way out of the underworld. That exit is blocked by the Devil’s Stone at the edge of the valley, at Švendubrė. The salty waters of Druskininkai are the tears of the damned.
