The road of M. K. Čiurlionis

Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911), the composer and painter who left the most significant mark on Lithuanian culture, is a unique artist in the history of European art. The path of M.K. Čiurlionis consists of a totality of memorial objects of his personality, signs commemorating his memory, and sites commemorating his life and work, connecting the objects according to the criteria of personal cultural topography. Čiurlionis’ Way actualises the signs of the artist’s life and work located in the cities of Vilnius, Kaunas, Druskininkai, Palanga and in the districts of Varėna, Rietavas and Plungė. The route connecting the sites of the Čiurlionis Way consists of about 500 km.

The Čiurlionis Route operates as a permanent route for visiting the sites. It consists of cultural memory institutions (museums and other institutions and organisations) that receive visitors on a permanent basis at publicly announced times. They present visitors with permanent expositions of M.K. Čiurlionis’ works and memorial spaces, thematic information exhibitions, special educational activities and thematic excursions to sites commemorating the life and work of the artist and composer (excursions are regularly organised according to detailed maps of the sites visited, “The Way of M. Čiurlionis Varėna, Čiurlionis Druskininkai, Čiurlionis Vilnius, Čiurlionis Kaunas, Čiurlionis Rietavas, Čiurlionis Plungė, Čiurlionis Palanga).

The partners of the Čiurlionis Route and the institutions and organisations participating in it also organise special events of the Čiurlionis Route: music festivals, creative camps, concert series, plein-air concerts, art weeks, conferences, and other cultural, artistic, educational and cultural tourism events. The most important events dedicated to the relevance of M. K. Čiurlionis’ work, organised annually or every few years, are: the International Arts Festival “Druskininkai Summer with M. K. Čiurlionis” (Druskininkai, Senoji Varėna, Perloja, Merkinė, and Liškiava); the cycle of recitals of the piano music of M. K. Čiurlionis Memorial Museum in Druskininkai; International M. K. Čiurlionis Festival (Palanga, Vilnius), International M. K. Čiurlionis Organists and Pianists Competition, Sofia Festival (Kuliai, Plungė district), etc.
