The grave of the participants of the 1863 Uprising in Stračiūnai

In September 1863, a battle between the rebels and the Tsar’s army took place near Prienai, after which the dispersed rebel regiment went to Grodno via Krikštonis. Here they were caught by the pursuing Tsarist army. 4 rebels were killed and buried in a village of local men. The rest of the rebels went through the forests of Živulciškės to Stračiūnai and camped in the forest, where they were unexpectedly caught by the Tsar’s army while having their lunch. The brave men shot and wounded a number of Tsarist soldiers, but the forces were unequal. After the battle, 20 men died and are buried in this grave.
