Švendubrė

It is one of the villages in the Druskininkai forests, located in the Raigard valley, 5 km from the resort. It was mentioned in historical documents in 1620. It is an old street village, an architectural monument. The old Djuk farmhouses with their distinctive fenced courtyards are particularly interesting. The meadows around the village, which cover an area of 20 square kilometres, are carved out by streams and rivulets. Where the Nemunykštis flows into the Nemunas, the Black Mountain stands on a steep hill. In the past it may have been a defensive point. From the top of the hill, you can see a magnificent panorama: the blue waters of the Nemunas meandering by, the valley of Raigard, carpeted in lush green, and the pine- and bush-covered Uzubalis Mountain in the distance. It is thought that a small wooden castle, surrounded by swamps and scrub, may have stood here in ancient times. To the north of the village there is a huge boulder, the Švendubrė (Devil’s) Stone, a geological monument, about which many stories and legends have been told.
