Ignacijus Fonbergas

fonbergasIgnacy Fonberg (1801-1891) was a professor at Vilnius University, and a chemist who studied Druskininkai’s mineral water.

He joined Vilnius University in 1821 as an assistant to Jędrzej Śniadecki (Andrew Sniadecki) in the chemistry and pharmacy department. By 1825 he had earned a Master of Philosophy degree and, in 1829, he was appointed professor of chemistry.

He conducted research on Druskininkai’s mineral waters in 1830, something which proved to be pivotal for the development of spa treatments in the area.

Ignacy Fonberg not only analysed the town’s mineral water but also prepared a comprehensive report on it, which he presented to the Vilnius Academy of Medicine and Surgery in 1835. Later that year he expanded and published the report.

Additionally, it was Ignacy Fonberg who initiated a project which would create a health resort in Druskininkai.
