Karolis Dineika (1898-1980) was a specialist in therapeutic physical education, a teacher, a scientist, and the creator of the earliest basketball rules. Born in Riga in 1898, he graduated in physical education in Dorpat (now Tartu) before returning to Lithuania in 1919. Between 1923 and 1926 he pursued further studies at Kaunas University.

Dineika taught at the ‘Courses for Physical Education Teachers’ (1923-1938) and the ‘Physical Education Course for Higher Education’ (1934-1937). He played a pivotal role in founding the Lithuanian Union of Physical Education in 1920 and the Lithuanian gymnastics and sports federation in 1922, serving as their first head.

He also led the Lithuanian men’s basketball team to victory in 1939 at the European Championships, securing the gold medal. Dineika was additionally an advocate for classic sports: gymnastics, tennis, and Lithuanian folk games, and he actively promoted their pursuit amongst young people.

He organised republic-wide courses in physical education for teachers, participated in them as a lecturer, and contributed physical education articles to various publications.

Between 1952 and 1980, Dineika dedicated almost three decades to Druskininkai, where he restored and developed the Therapeutic Physical Culture and Climate Therapy Park, now named in his honour the K Dineika Wellness Park. Here he pioneered unique methods of treatment, emphasising the therapeutic benefits of natural factors such as air, sun, and water, as well as the use of exercise, breathing techniques, and psycho-physical training for healing and health promotion.

Thanks to Dineika’s efforts, the park evolved into the republic’s centre for therapeutic physical culture and climate therapy, serving as a scientific and methodological institution.

It is still very important for the resort to use physiotherapy in the treatment of illnesses and injuries, and to apply rehabilitation measures such as psychotherapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and others. The fact that Druskininkai is known as a famous health-conscious town is also due to Karolis Dineika. His theoretical and practical contributions to therapeutic complex physical education remain influential today, being utilised by healthcare professionals and trainers both in Lithuania and abroad.
