New cultural space in Druskininkai: The Museum of the world-famous sculptor Jacques Lipschitz will open its doors on 17 April

2026.04.10

The Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History is pleased to announce the establishment of a new branch in Druskininkai – the Jacques Lipshitz Museum! The Jacques Lipshitz Museum will open its doors on Friday, 17 April , at 16:00 and invites all Druskininkai residents and tourists to get acquainted with the new cultural space.

The museum presents the world-famous Lithuanian sculptor Jacques Lipschitz (1891-1973), born and raised in Druskininkai – a pioneer of cubist sculpture who left a bright mark on the sculptural art of the 20th century. Visitors will learn about the sculptor’s creative path, which led from Druskininkai through Vilnius to Paris and New York, as well as about the history of the Jewish community in Druskininkai.

The exhibition uses modern technology to explore history and art in an interactive and creative way. It is an open and accessible space for all, convenient for local visitors, Lithuanian and foreign tourists and people with special needs. Visitors to the museum will find not only a permanent exhibition, but also changing exhibitions and educational programmes for different age groups.

From 17 to 19 April, Druskininkai will host events related to the opening of the Jacques Lipschitz Museum. Entrance to the museum will be free of charge on these days. On 18-19 April (Saturday-Sunday) there will be free educational events for children and adults, as well as special guided tours with the curator, during which you can learn more about the idea of the exhibition, the museum facilities and the history of the Jewish community in Druskininkai.

By opening its doors, the museum intends to become a long-term cultural heritage centre, contributing to the development of sustainable tourism and improving the cultural life of the Druskininkai resort. This is an important cultural event for the city that gave the world the international sculptor Jacques Lipshitz, an artist whose importance is equalled to figures such as Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, and of whom Druskininkai can be proud. This year, on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of the birth of Ja. Lipshits, the event takes on even greater significance. As Jacques Lipshitz himself wrote, “without our roots we would not have created the great trees of life” (from a letter to Vladas Vildziūnas, 1972).

Opening hours of the Jacques Lipschitz Museum:

17 April 2026 – 16:00-18:00.
18 April 2026 – 11:00-18:00.
19 April 2026 – 11:00-18:00.

The project “Installation of the permanent exhibition of the Jacques Lipschitz Museum in Druskininkai” is funded by the State of the Republic of Lithuania and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
